The shipping company Navigasa is to order two more cargo ships from the Armón shipyard in Vigo
The shipping company Navigasa is to order two more multi-use cargo ships from the Armón shipyard in Vigo, to be ready in 2010 and which will be similar to the “Manuela E”, handed over yesterday during an act attended by some 150 people, including the businessman Fernando Fernández Tapias, who has been a shareholder in the company since last November, in the Beiramar installations. The order for two new cargo ships was confirmed yesterday by the President of Navigasa, Darío Amor, on reception of the “Manuela E”, the first of the two merchant ships intended for the international transportation of all kinds of cargo which the shipping company ordered from the Vigo shipyard for 23 million euros. The second of the vessels which make up this first order will be handed over next year to the shipping company, in which Xesgalicia has a 15% share.
The President of Navigasa pointed out that this operation is included in the expansion plan for the period 2004-2008 and that in the future there will be “further pleasant surprises and important projects with regard to future orders”, which he preferred not to disclose for the time being.
Laudelino Alperi, chief executive of Armón, pointed out that for Navigasa the order for the cargo ships means “opening a new market, because we had never built container ships before, and this enables us to open up another space in the market”.
Apart from the two cargo vessels ordered by Navigasa and two more to be confirmed, Armón is building its first asphalt tanker weighing 7,000 tonnes, for an Irish company.
Orders
The shipyard is also building a 40-metre long long-liner for a shipowner in Ribeira, a trawler for Ireland, and has also received orders for an off-shore vessel for Italy and an 80-metre long cooperation vessel for the Food and Agriculture Ministry.
Armón’s head office in Vigo has an annual turnover of between forty and sixty million euros, according to estimates by Alpieri. With the orders already signed, the company spokesman pointed out that the shipyard has its work load covered for the next two years. At present the shipyard employs 200 people, including direct and indirect labour as well as auxiliary company labour. (Source: La Voz de Galicia).
