Aister will build the Jeune France II: a new hybrid catamaran for Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
With an overall length of 22.5 meters and a beam of 7.5 meters, this aluminium catamaran is designed to displace 75 tonnes at full load, with capacity for 100 passengers.
Aister has been awarded the contract for the construction and delivery of the Jeune France II, an advanced passenger catamaran built entirely in aluminium. This innovative naval project, with an investment of four million euros, is scheduled for delivery in September 2027. The vessel will enter service for the Territorial Collectivity of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, replacing the current Jeune France on the strategic route between the port of Saint-Pierre and the island of Langlade.
Tailor-made design: direct beach landing
Jeune France II stands out for its technical versatility. With a length of 22.5 meters and a beam of 7.5 meters, this aluminium catamaran is designed to displace 75 tonnes at full load and accommodate up to 100 passengers.
Given the lack of port infrastructure on Langlade Island, Aister’s design includes specific engineering solutions for beach landings:
- Optimized trim: allows the bow to safely make direct contact with the seabed.
- Integrated logistics: features a hydraulic bow ramp to facilitate passenger disembarkation and the loading of vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes.
Hybrid propulsion: commitment to sustainability
In line with Aister’s commitment to the energy transition, the vessel’s design prioritizes reducing its carbon footprint. The key lies in its parallel hybrid propulsion system, which combines:
- Latest-generation diesel engines: two 368 kW units compliant with the strict IMO Tier III low-emission standards.
- Electric propulsion system enables port manoeuvres and low-speed navigation in silence and with zero emissions.
- This configuration will allow the catamaran to reach a service speed of 12 knots, balancing operational efficiency with respect for the marine ecosystem.
Excellence from Vigo’s Bay
The entire construction and outfitting process will take place at Aister’s facilities in Moaña. With this new milestone, the shipyard strengthens its position as an international benchmark in aluminium shipbuilding, delivering technological solutions that help define the future of professional maritime transport.
