A shipyard in Gondomar wins a contract to build five boats for Spanish Navy for 4.1 million euros

The project has a four-year construction period, and the boats will be used to collect waste and spills.

Zyon Galicia, a shipyard in Gondomar, has been awarded a contract by the Spanish Ministry of Defence to build five aluminium boats, 12.5 to 13 meters-long, to collect waste at naval yards. The budget is €4.1 million, including taxes, and the construction period is four years. The boats must be built to have a lifespan of at least twenty years. Their cruising speed must be five knots per hour, and their maximum speed must exceed eight knots.

The boats must have a beam between 3 and 3.5 meters, a depth between 1.60 and 2 meters, and a draft between 80 centimetres and 1.2 meters. The overall height of each boat must allow for easy transport by road on a flatbed truck. The vessels must be highly operational, capable of setting sail within 30 minutes fully refuelled and starting with their engines off.

Spanish Ministry of Defence advises the number of equipment items exposed to the elements on board must be kept to a minimum and placed in sheltered locations protected from waves. The shipyard is obligated to provide covers or tarpaulins when not in use to protect them from the elements, and these covers must be in perfect working order.

Safety is paramount on board of the vessels, and the Spanish Ministry of Defence requires robust handrails throughout the deck and a hull designed to allow for proper water circulation during pumping operations.

The vessels must have sufficient space and connections to install an oil recovery system with a suction capacity of at least 30 cubic meters per hour for spills. They must also have a 3.5-cubic-meter bin for collecting floating solid waste, capable of carrying at least one ton of garbage.
