Freire Lays Keel for Denmark’s Oceanographic Vessel
The ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the 70-meter-long, €57million vessel
Vigo-based Freire Shipyard celebrated the keel-laying of the new oceanographic vessel for DTU, the Technical University of Denmark. The ship, commissioned for €57 million and named Dana V, is scheduled for delivery in autumn 2027.
The vessel will be 70-m-long and 16-m-wide, with capacity for 38 people on board. It will serve as a platform for research and education of the highest international calibre.
“It is a great pleasure that we can now mark the beginning of the physical construction of Dana V,” said DTU Director Claus Nielsen, noting the vessel will be “technically advanced and capable of navigating almost silently in the oceans and Arctic waters.”
“The laying of the keel of Dana V is a significant milestone, and I am eagerly anticipating the vessel’s final delivery in autumn 2027,” explained DTU Professor Fritz Köster. “With Dana V, we will be able to carry out multidisciplinary research, including advanced hydroacoustic noise reduction, and we will benefit from its polar-class capabilities,” he added.
From their side, brothers Marcos and Guillermo Freire, shipyard’s managing directors, stated that the oceanographic vessel “represents a significant step forward for Danish marine research.” “Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, it combines long-range navigation capabilities with an environmentally friendly approach to marine ecosystems, enabling it to operate in the most demanding Arctic conditions. This vessel reflects our commitment to innovation and marine science,” they said.
