Murueta Shipyard to build a next-generation salmon transport vessel for Norwegian Frøy

Vessel delivery scheduled for the second half of 2027

Astilleros de Murueta will build a state-of-the-art salmon vessel for the Norwegian group Frøy, backed by Pymar. It is a live fish carrier with a loading capacity of 4,500 cubic metres, "designed and built to meet the highest standards in terms of safety on board and sustainability in the transport, treatment and handling of salmon", according to Pymar in its statement, adding that vessel delivery is scheduled for the second half of 2027.

In the same press release, it is reported this new generation salmon fishing vessel will be 87.7 metres long and 20.6 metres wide and will be classified by the Det Norske Veritas classification society. It will also have technology designed to guarantee the quality and well-being of live fish during transport, treatment and handling on board; as well as systems capable of automatically separating fish by size, among other tools.

For this contract, Astilleros de Murueta will have financing and guarantees from ICO, Cesce, the Basque Institute of Finance, Banco Sabadell, EBN and Pymar. PYMAR's participation in the operation, as stated by the organization itself, will occur through guarantees from the Naval Guarantee Fund, an instrument in which, together with the Spanish private shipyards, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Basque Country regional Government participate.

The operation has had the counselling of law firms Hogan Lovells, Watson Farley & Williams and Penningtons Manches Cooper.
Mikel Jauregi, Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of Basque Government, has highlighted "one of the challenges we have as a country is the decarbonisation of transport, including maritime transport. With this new vessel, capable of operating in zero-emission mode, Murueta sets an example of how the commitment to innovation is essential to take a step forward in the challenge of the energy transition, using in this case cutting-edge technology made in Euskadi".

For her part, Almudena López del Pozo, PYMAR’s CEO highlighted "we are very pleased to be able to support such relevant projects as the construction of this vessel that incorporates cutting-edge technology. This operation is a good example of PYMAR's commitment to promoting productivity, efficiency and innovation in our naval industry, essential requirements to reinforce its growth and competitiveness".

Astilleros de Murueta currently has four vessels in its portfolio and a history of more than 300 units delivered to international shipowners. In recent years, it has focused its activity on the construction of vessels of different types. For its part, Frøy is a private Norwegian group and a leading provider of service solutions for fish farmers with a fleet of around 90 vessels and a workforce of approximately 1,100 employees.
