Armón shipyard accounts for half of Spanish shipbuilding

The latest shipbuilding report from Spanish Ministry of Industry places Galicia in second position with 37% of the order book, after Asturias with 44%

Armón is the sole operator in the Spanish shipbuilding sector. The Asturian group, which has two shipyards in Vigo, has half of all shipbuilding contracts in Spain: of the 61 orders in the order book by the end of the third quarter, 30 are from Armón. The percentage increases with new orders, 31 obtained throughout the Spanish territory, 21 are from this company. This is reflected in the latest shipbuilding report just been published by the Ministry of Industry, which places Galicia in second position - 37% of the order book - after Asturias - 44% -. They are followed by the Basque Country with 19%.

In the Galician community, most of shipbuilding is concentrated in Vigo with the shipyards Armón, Ría de Vigo (from the same group) and Freire leading the way. The statistics for the third quarter show 13 shipbuilding contracts in these three factories, two more in Cardama and three in Nodosa, in Marín, while the Vigo-based Metalships has none. Galician shipyard Blascar Naval, in Ferrol, is making its debut in the latest report from the Ministry of Industry, with two constructions. So, in total, Galicia has 20 orders at the end of the third quarter.

From these twenty contracts, we should subtract some already been delivered, such as, for example, two fishing boats built by Nodosa for Pereira and Pescapuerta or another trawler from Armón for Copemar. In addition, we should add new works awarded to the shipyards. This is the case of two ships for the Swedish Armed Forces for Armón Vigo, a support ship for the Spanish Navy in Freire, a ferry for French Polynesia and a trawler for Iceland in Vigo’s Bay and two patrol boats for Uruguay that Cardama will build, but which have not yet come into force.
