Vigo shipbuilder’s bids for Denmark's oceanographic vessel

Freire and Armón shipyards submit bids for 50 million euros
Vigo-based shipyard, established as an international benchmark in the construction of marine research vessels, is now bidding for the new order from the Technical University of Denmark, valued at 370 million Danish crowns, almost 50 million euros.
Freire and Armón Vigo have already provided the Danish institution with everything they can contribute to the field of oceanographic models, according to sources in the sector familiar with the process. They are participating in the tender together with Gondán shipyard from Asturias and Mest naval company, from Faroe Islands.
The new order from Denmark that Galician shipbuilder is hoping for, is known as Dana V and is designed to replace the Dana IV after more than forty years of operations at sea. Specifically, the Vigo shipyards have demonstrated their ability to build a 68-metre-long oceanographic vessel that will sail through icy waters in the Baltic Sea and the Arctic without emitting noise that would alter ecosystems during navigation. The Danish academy intends to incorporate it into its fleet in 2027.
Powered by a diesel-electric system, the Danish research vessel is designed for marine and maritime research to carry out work such as monitoring fish populations, hydroacoustic studies or biological, chemical and physical oceanography projects. One of the keys will be the adaptation of its hull to develop a large part of its activity on ice blocks.
Armón Vigo and Freire Shipyard are competing for this new contract with the experience of two shipyards that currently have several oceanographic orders underway on their slipways. In the first case, the group from Asturias has just delivered, for example, the Odón de Buen, the new flagship of Spanish oceanography, as well as shaping new units for Iceland, Northern Ireland or Azores islands. The second company from Vigo has just obtained the new order for Saudi Arabia.
