Armón is awarded a contract to build towboats in Panama

Armón will undertake the construction of the tugboats at its Navia shipyard,

The Asturian group Astilleros Armón has just been awarded a mega contract for ten tugboats for the Panama Canal for an amount of 142 million euros, with the option of another order for another ten additional ships for the same client, with which the total contract would reach, at the current exchange rate, an amount of 297.5 million euros.

The Panama Canal has been working for several years on the tender to provide more tugboats to assist the huge traffic of merchant ships and large ships that use the passage that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The mega order will mean manufacturing in Navia of 10 tugboats for a combined amount of almost 150 million dollars (about 142 million euros at the current exchange rate). If the second order were confirmed, the value of the contract would rise to a total of 315 million dollars, almost 300 million euros.
The Panama Canal has been working for several years on the tender to provide more tugboats to assist the huge traffic of merchant ships and large ships that use the passage that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Armón's economic offer far exceeded those of other competitors, such as the Dutch shipyard Damen and the Turkish Sanmar Shipyard. Armón's proposal was almost 30% lower than the next cheapest offer.

Once the contract is formalized – an essential requirement to activate the order – the group led by Laudelino Alperi and José Ramón Fernández will build each of the first ten tugboats for an amount of 14.1 million euros at the current exchange rate. If the extension of the contract with the ten optional units is completed, each of them will have a price of 15.6.

The total amount includes training for the ships’ future crew members, with a cost of 875,000 dollars (826,000 euros).
