MetalShips closes the contract of a new support vessel for oil platforms
The shipyard from Vigo MetalShips & Docks, from Rodman's Group, has closed the contract of a new off-shore vessel for the support to oil platforms for 107 millions Euros. The ship, 135 meters long, has been ordered by the French multinational Technip, a world reference in the off-shore business, with a big fleet and more than 20.000 workers. With this vessel, MetalShips assures its workload until the end of 2012.
The vessel is the sixth of a series built in the shipyard. The other vessels were delivered to the companies Bourbon (2) , MacDermott (1), and Technip (1). And recently the construction of a second unit for MacDermott has begun. The new off-shore consolidates MetalShips as a reference in the construction of vessels specialized in giving service to oil platforms.
The shipyard has already received the first payment for the contract, signed several weeks ago. The ship, with the last technology, will be 136.65 meters long and 27 meter wide. It has four motor groups of 20.980 Horse Power, and it will have the capacity of 120 people, according to the company source. This construction guarantees until the end of next year the activity in the shipyard Rios that employs more than 85 workers and 300 auxiliaries.
Technip and Bourbon are specialized in the off-shore business. Technip, the owner of the vessel, is between the top five biggest companies of the world in complete services of engineering and construction in hydrocarbons and petrochemical products. It has presence in all the continents and employs more than 20.000 people. Its turnover is higher than 7.000 millions.
MetalShips will deliver on next weeks another off-shore vessel, the North Sea Giant, one of the biggest ships in its category, 1554 meters long, that in these days is realizing trainings in the sea of Vigo. The shipyard from this city invests last spring 30 millions in the extension of its installations and in the acquisition of a third floating dock, with the aim of reinforce its repair department. El buque es el sexto de una serie construida en el astillero. Los otros buques fueron entregados a las compañías Bourbon (2), MacDermott (1) y a la propia Technip (1). Y recientemente se ha iniciado la construcción de una segunda unidad para MacDermott. El nuevo off-shore consolida a Metalships como un referente en la construcción de buques especializados para servir a las plataformas petrolíferas.
El astillero ya ha recibido el primer pago para la entrada en vigor del contrato, firmado hace unas semanas. El buque, que incorporará última tecnología, tendrá una eslora de 135,65 metros y una manga de 27. Estará provisto de cuatro grupos de motores con una potencia de 20.890 HP (Horse Power), y tendrá capacidad suficiente para acoger a unos 120 tripulantes, según informó ayer la empresa. Esta construcción garantiza hasta finales del próximo año la actividad en el astillero de Ríos, que emplea a 85 trabajadores fijos y a más de 300 de las auxiliares.

Technip, la armadora de este buque, se encuentra entre las cinco mayores compañías del mundo en servicios completos de ingeniería y construcción en los campos de hidrocarburos y productos petroquímicos. Metalships entregará en las próximas semanas otro buque off-shore, el North Sea Giant, uno de los buques de su categoría más grandes que existen, con 154 metros de eslora, que estos días se encuentra realizando las pruebas de mar por la ría de Vigo (en la fotografía). El astillero vigués invirtió la pasada primavera 30 millones en la ampliación de sus instalaciones y en la adquisición de un tercer dique flotante, con el objetivo de reforzar su negocio de reparaciones.
