NAVANTIA CANDIDATE FOR DESIGNING BETWEEN 2 AND 3 AMPHIBIOUS BOATS FOR CANADA

Navantia aspires to obtain a contract with the Navy of Canada for the design of between two and three amphibious boats similar to the one that the shipyard in Ferrol is constructing for the Spanish Navy. Representatives of the Canadian Navy already have visited the facilities of Bazán in Ferrol to know the characteristics and benefits of the ship of strategic projection (BPE), baptized like ”megaship” due to its enormous proportions. Thus, it has 217 meters of length (long); 32 of sleeve (wide) and capacity to move up to 1,355 people, in addition to several helicopters and landing crafts.

If finally the contest opened by the Government of Ottawa is won, Navantia would only take care of the design of the ships and the transference from technology to the shipyards in the North American country, where the ships would be constructed. The minister of Defense, Jose Bond, announced last Tuesday in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, that possibilities of cooperation had been tackled between the military industry of both countries.
This kind of ships are highly demanded nowadays in the international market, due to the fact that they are prepared to act equally in both war operations as well as in humanitarian support missions in case of natural disaster.

This tendency is more and more frequent between the Governments that are developing naval programs: they open their contests to the international outlook for the design of innovative ships, but demand that they are constructed in their own shipyards. This one is the case of the Navy of Australia, with which the company that Juan Pedro Gómez Jaén presides also maintains negotiations.
