Vigo unveils the jewel oceanography for Saudi Arabia

Freire Launches Oceanographic Vessel for King Abdullah University

Vigo Shines a Light on Oceanography for the Middle East. Freire Shipyard launched marine research vessel Thuwal II this afternoon, which it is building for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Fifty meters-long, the Galician shipyard's vessel will be a key piece of infrastructure for deep-sea exploration of the Red Sea and unlocking its enormous potential. Just one year after construction began, the Bouzas-based shipbuilder launched the vessel to continue work on the water, with the order expected to be completed by early 2027.

The modern research vessel will have a capacity for thirty people and is designed to operate for more than three decades. Its modular structure will allow for the incorporation of several experimental laboratories, adapting to current and future marine technologies for Red Sea exploration. This modularity will also facilitate the implementation of new, environmentally friendly propulsion technologies, reducing its carbon footprint over time. Thuwal II is the second oceanographic vessel Freire has equipped for the Middle East, having delivered another unit to the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency in 2023. The order for Saudi Arabia further confirms the shipyard's experience in the oceanographic segment, where it already boasts fourteen projects for the international market.

The oceanographic vessel "represents a decisive step in our commitment to strengthening the scientific infrastructure and protecting the Red Sea ecosystem. This new addition will open the door to high-impact technological collaborations," the university stated at the keel-laying ceremony.
