Nautilus Sleeping Pod: A New Chapter in Marine Accommodation
Metalika introduces a flexible onboard sleeping solution that enhances privacy, comfort, and space efficiency for modern passenger and crew accommodation.
In recent years, the focus on comfort at sea has evolved. Ferry and offshore operators are increasingly looking for ways to create spaces that feel more private, comfortable, and better suited to the needs of today’s passengers and crew. From this search for improved rest environments, Metalika developed the Nautilus Sleeping Pod, a compact alternative to traditional onboard accommodation.
The concept is simple: a self-contained, IMO-certified sleeping space that provides a higher level of privacy in areas where space is limited. Nautilus Sleeping Pods have now been installed as passenger accommodation on several ferries operated by DFDS and Baja Ferries, as well as crew accommodation on several working vessels.
Traditional sleeping arrangements at sea, such as lounge seats and shared cabins, do not always meet the needs of users who are looking for a more private sleeping area. The Nautilus Pod was developed from the insight that even a modest amount of personal space can greatly improve comfort. Each pod offers users a place to retreat from surrounding noise and activity. Sound-absorbing materials create a calmer atmosphere, while the enclosed design adds a stronger sense of separation. Passengers value the added privacy, and crew benefit from a more defined personal sleeping area.
Another reason for the growing interest in the pod is its flexibility. It can be installed during refurbishment projects or integrated into newbuild designs. Installation requires no structural changes, as the system connects easily to the vessel’s power supply and ventilation system. The pods can also be delivered flat-packed, allowing them to pass through restricted access points during installation.
Pods can be arranged as single units, in stacked configurations, or in small clusters, making it easier to use spaces that might otherwise remain underutilized. This adaptability allows the concept to fit a wide range of vessels and use cases.
At Navalia, visitors will be able to see the Nautilus Sleeping Pod at the Metalika stand up close and explore its potential for integration into their vessels.
