The Royal Spanish Naval League, which Navalia is a member of, is an institution that unites the aspirations and interests of Spain’s four maritime sectors: Spanish Navy, Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleet, and Recreational Fleet. Its mission is to promote and safeguard Spain’s maritime interests in the broadest sense.
Its origins date back to Spanish Maritime League, established in 1900 aiming to represent the maritime sector aspirations for authorities and public opinion, while also promoting the development of national maritime activity. In 1901, the organisation convened the First National Maritime Congress, an event that help to raise awareness among Spanish politicians of the need to promote Spanish Navy, Merchant Navy, and fishing industry progress.
After disappearing during the Spanish Civil War, it was re-established in 1970 under the name Spanish Naval League. In 1978, the International Federation of Maritime and Naval Leagues and Associations was founded. This federation currently brings together ten Ibero-American Naval Leagues, with its General Secretariat held by the Royal Spanish Naval League. In 1993, the Royal Household granted the Spanish Naval League the right to use the title “Royal”.
The Royal Spanish Naval League has different areas of activity. These include Culture, which promotes cultural initiatives related to maritime world; Recreational Boating and Nautical Tourism, which supports leisure sailing and nautical tourism both within Spain and abroad; and the Naval Modelling Department, which promotes interest in naval modelling among enthusiasts, organising exhibitions, workshops on modelling techniques, courses in naval architecture and drawing for modellers, as well as demonstrations of radio-controlled models.
It includes an Archive and Library Area dedicated to preserving the Royal Spanish Naval League’s historical documentary collections and promoting access to its bibliographic and cartographic holdings housed on its premises.
The Fisheries Department is responsible for the marine environment protection and sustainable fishing promotion. The Underwater Archaeology Department works to raise awareness among inhabitants and the Spanish Administrations on the importance of Spain's underwater cultural heritage. The Sustainability Department aims to integrate the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) framework into the marine world.
