Brave Tern vessel modification will start this 2024 at Navantia Ferrol

The project will improve and replace cranes on the ship specialized in wind turbines transportation and installation in offshore wind farms.

Brave Tern AS, a Fred. Olsen Windcarrier (FOWIC) subsidiary has selected Navantia S.A., S.M.E. and its facilities at Navantia Reparaciones Ría de Ferrol to carry out a project to improve and replace cranes on the Brave Tern, a jack-up vessel specialized on the transport and installation of wind turbines in offshore wind farms.

The first phase of the project, which includes engineering, materials procurement, and prefabrication, was completed during 2023, and a second phase including the actual onboard installation work will be carried out after ship's arrival at the shipyard in January 2024. It is estimated the ship will remain in the shipyard for approximately seven months, this period will be divided between work in a dry dock and in a repair, dock involving the shipyard facilities in both Ferrol and Fene.

It is an important project for both: FOWIC, upgrading the vessel to meet future demand of larger wind turbines installations, and Navantia, probing its expertise in completing complex ship improvement projects and ensuring for many months of work for its own employees and auxiliary industries.

FOWIC, in addition to the improvement and replacement of the cranes, will carry out major maintenance activities that will also include the assistance of local suppliers and specialized contractors brought from abroad, all of which will have a positive impact on Ferrol and its region.

FOWIC and Navantia project teams have been working together for the past year and will continue their close co-operation to ensure successful project execution.
