Wind at their backs: Shippers sail to New IMO Regulations

CROE Scrubbers Smart Alternative to 0.5% Sulfur Cap

A month and a half into the transition to the 0.5 percent sulfur cap for bunker fuel, all’s well for those shippers who’ve chosen scrubber technology to meet the stringent requirements that went into effect January 1St, 2020.

Known in the industry as the "IMO 2020" regulation, this significant reduction in allowed emissions seeks to have major health and environmental benefits for residents in ports and areas of great shipping activity.

The price of bunker fuel remains a major challenge — that is for shippers who haven’t installed scrubbers.

The Maritime Executive reports that, “However, the spread between the compliant fuels and the HFO, which is currently getting cheaper, has peaked from $280/mt up to more than $400/mt in some major bunkering ports, and the fact is that most owners are experiencing high and uncertain heavy fuel”.

As to those smart shipowners who thought ahead and installed scrubbers, “it is nothing but good news,” notes The Maritime Executive. They can burn the fuel they want — as the powerful technology reduces emissions and, a series of studies have proven, is safe for the environment.

A great many of those scrubbers have been designed, manufactured, and installed by CR Ocean Engineering.

CR Ocean Engineering, with roots dating back to the year 1917, was organized to meet the demand for clean emissions in the shipping industry. It leverages its history of designing, manufacturing, and supplying scrubbing systems that began over 60 years ago for industries across the board.

Today, the benefits of that technology extend to the world’s oceans through CR Ocean Engineering, LLC, a company with worldwide presence that offers and delivers to the shipping industry proven, superior Exhaust Gas Scrubbing Systems, which reduce emissions from engines and boilers burning high Sulphur fuels to help shipowners comply with IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI 0.1%S and 0.5%S requirements while continuing to burn the higher Sulphur HFO.

Achieving the IMO sulfur fuel equivalency is easy and economical with the CROE scrubbers. This technology is available in Open Loop, Closed Loop, and Hybrid. It is suitable for new builds and can be retrofitted to existing vessels.

Market Watch considers CR Ocean Engineering a leading player in this competitive field, as was shown in a recent study.

CROE® will be participating in the NAVALIA International Shipping Exhibition, 19Th-21St of May, 2020. BOOTH: G25.
