The Orders Made to Freire Until 2009 Got Incresed with Another Oceanographic Ship

The Vigo shipyard hands over the first ship, christens the second, and launches the third one of an eight series Freire Shipyard increases its work load until 2009 after signing a contract, before the end of the month, for building a new oceanographic ship for a media group, which name has not been disclosed yet.

Its President, Jesus Freire underlined the “sweet” period that the shipbuilding is experiencing at the Vigo Ría, as well as the social peace in the sector, and the support given by the Xunta, “this is the best I have seen since the 40 years that I have been in the sector.”

The new ship will have larger dimensions than the 70,50 meters long “Sarmiento de Gamboa” that the shipyard is about to finish for the CSIC. The President, Jesús Freire, informed that the new ship is for a group related with submarine research and submarine cable. The ship will be reinforced against the ice for operating in the North and South Pole and will have available a 10.000 miles autonomy. In addition, it will be equipped with a submarine that has being acquired by the shipowner.

Freire celebrated, at their facilities, a ceremony to hand over the first container ship, of an eight series that is building for the Anglo-Duch company Carisbrooks Shipping. In addition, they christen the second and launched the third one. A hundred guests from England, Holland and Germany attended to the ceremony invited by the shipowners.

Out of the eight ships, five of them will be handed over this year, the other three will be handed over between January and April of 2008.
