Barreras Launches the Fith 154 Meter Ferry of the Eight Ordered by Armas

This month the 1.653 structure build by the shipyard was launched, the ferry Volcán Tamadaba built for Naviera Armas, which meant an investment of 90 million euros. This is the fifth unit out of a series of eight ordered by the Canary Islands ship-owner, so three more must be built to finish the contract. The keel of the next ferry-the six one- would be placed on next week. The Naviera Armas President, Antonio Armas, said that this boat will be used to transport cargo and passengers among the Canary Islands, Larzarote, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura.
The Volcán Tamada, with 154,35 meters of length and 24,20 meters of beam, can transport 1.000 passengers and load 57 16-meter containers and 174 cars on the 3 lanes with 1.870 meters of length and 3 meters of wide. The cruising speed of this unit will be 23 knots per hour.
On the other hand, the construction of a ferry of 193 meters of length for Balierina, a shipping company from Alicante, will require the shipyard to carry out a reinforcement of the slipway, so it can withstand the weight of the steel mass that will start to be built in 2008 and which will be the largest vessel ever built in the Ria. Barreras will have to brace the shores, which make up the base for slipway that supports the weight of the vessels built in the Beiramar shipyard. The Spanish shipyard has begun an expansion plan which includes the purchase of two shipyards located in the Shangai port area, in China. Barreras is going through its best period of production since the company started 114 years ago; they have an order book of 12 vessels, which would guarantee a work load until 2010.
