First hybrid bunker tarker in Europe launched by spanish Murueta Shipyards
92.5 m-length and 18 m-beam, "Bahía Levante" will be able to hold up to 7,800 cubic meters of hydrocarbons upon delivery
The first hybrid oil tanker in Europe, also the first with zero emissions in port, has been launched at Astilleros de Murueta facilities in Bilbao. It is a ship for the transport of liquid hydrocarbon cargoes that can also be dedicated to bunkering, or supplying fuel to other ships at sea, its name is “Bahía Levante”, and has been commissioned by the Basque shipowner Mureloil.
The construction of this ship is of great importance for the sector and its launching has had the participation of the Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability, and the Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, and the presence of Repsol, Cepsa, Trafigura, Nyala, Stenaoil and Galp-Sacor Managers.
With a length of 92.5 meters and a beam of 18, “Bahía Levante” will be able to hold up to 7,800 cubic meters of hydrocarbons upon delivery, scheduled for the end of this year. Combines electric diesel and hybrid propulsion, with storing energy system using batteries, thus managing to eliminate polluting emissions at port, both CO2 and noise.
This innovative ship, the first of its category in Europe, has been designed and built by Astilleros Murueta, which thus records its 325th construction. It will have a dual function: On one hand, it will transport liquid hydrocarbon loads between refineries and points of consumption and, on the other hand, will also serve as a supply ship for other ships, transferring fuel from the refineries to larger ships docked in port.
The work strengthens Astilleros de Murueta's commitment to technologically advanced vessel designs with a high component of innovation, seeking energy efficiency and the use of new fuels. In fact, the shipyard's latest projects have been in this line of high innovation, such as the construction of the "Oiz Mendi" ship in 2018, the first LNG (liquefied natural gas) supply ship in Spain and "Ibaizabal Quince”, in 2020, the first port tug powered by LNG in Spain.
