The Port of Vigo and shipbuilding sector are committed to a joint strategy that positions this industry as a benchmark

Over twenty representatives participated in a new meeting of the Commission framed within the Blue Growth strategy (sustainable blue economy) of the Port of Vigo

Vigo Port Authority has just held a new meeting of the Shipbuilding Commission, which is part of the Blue Growth strategy and where over twenty representatives of the sector participated. The meeting, which lasted just over two hours, was chaired by the Head of the port, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, and part of his management team, as well as representatives of the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), the Galician Shipbuilding Cluster Association (ACLUNAGA), the Association of Metal Industries and Associated Technologies of Galicia (ASIME), the business association "Vigo Ship Repair", the foundation for fishing and shell fishing (Fundamar), the innovation centre for maritime and fisheries legal studies and support for the blue economy and society (MarINnLeg), the Shipowners Cooperative of the Port of Vigo (ARVI), shipyards on both sides of the Vigo’s Bay such as Cardama and Aister, Abanca, industrial supply companies such as Ibercisa or renewable energy specialists like Univergy.

The session served as a meeting point to share topics of interest that affect shipbuilding and ship repair sector competitiveness, as well as to design and implement joint action strategies.

Challenges and objectives
Among challenges and objectives of the new strategy launched by the Port Authority of Vigo for period 2021-2027, the definition of a joint strategy that positions the sector as an international benchmark, through the implementation of pilots of new energies (electricity, hydrogen, LNG,...), the commitment to specialized ships and intersectoral cooperation reinforces the value chain; the commitment to innovation to build “the ship of the future”: an intelligent ship, more energy efficient, with cleaner alternative propulsion technologies and better habitability; position the Port of Vigo as a competitive port of refuge for ship repair, where incoming ships are informed in advance of the availability of this service and implementation of large ship recycling; reorganization of the spaces, with a specific area enabled for repair tasks and necessary for the development of offshore construction initiatives; and financing of construction, with the aim of obtaining support from institutions that can act as intermediaries in European programs to support naval projects.

Apart from that, the evolution of the sector was analysed during the meeting, a study prepared by MarInnLeg on the Level Playing Field was reported and the status of implementation of the projects in progress since the beginning of the Growth initiative was put on the table. Blue, such as those related to the sustainability and humanization of fishing fleet, adaptation of infrastructures for the shipbuilding industry 4.0, mobility electrification project in the “Green Bay Vigo” , “Julio Verne” project on hydrogen implantation, or studies carried out through the innovation centre for maritime and fisheries legal studies and support for the blue economy and society (MarINnLeg), a spin-off that emerged around the Blue Growth strategy, in addition to reviewing the main indicators and the degree of achievement of the first stage of Blue Growth strategy (2016-2020).
