Government authorizes activation of new IEO vessel procurement process

They will be a maximum of 30 months and the financing will be divided into 3 annuities

The bidding process for the new reference oceanographic, 90 meters long, of the Spanish oceanographic fleet is closer after the Council of Ministers has authorized the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) to launch the contract. The new BOMAG, a global multi-purpose oceanographic vessel, is part of the Science and Innovation Crash Plan approved last July, and has a budget of €70 million, of which 80% comes from EU FEDER funds.

The Government has reported that the contract will have an estimated duration of 30 months, including the completion of the engineering project and its construction. The process will be divided into three annuities: 17.5 million euros in 2021, 31.5 million in 2022 and 21 million in 2023. In addition, the investment of another 15 million euros in equipment is envisaged.

The future ship, scheduled to be delivered in 2023, will expand the IEO’s "operational capability and address new responsibilities and challenges in the field of oceanographic research at the global level," says the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
