DNV GL Spain perform their first Advisory Board

The meeting focused on IMO requirements for emission reduction, the search for alternative fuels, digitization and their impact on ship design, as well as fleet management and maintenance.

DNV GL Spain Maritime have just held their first Advisory Board in one of the four towers that constitute the “skyline” of Madrid. In this first Council, which will now be held annually on these same dates, DNV GL have brought together shipowners, shipyards, public and private organizations and technical offices of the Spanish shipbuilding industry. The session has served as a meeting point, introduction of initiatives and experiences related to new technologies or regulations in the implementation phase, as well as to share experiences on cybersecurity, or digitalization, and as a forum for debate on issues related to maritime transport and to the shipbuilding industry.

The meeting agenda was focused on IMO requirements regarding emission reduction, alternative fuels research, digitalization and its impact on ship design, as well as fleet management and maintenance. With the IMO deadline on the horizon in 2050, participants also discussed the measures that builders, designers, shipowners could take and Classification Societies in a common effort to design and operate more efficient, more environmentally friendly ships.

Regarding this issue, Jose Allona presented the current status of regulations on ship recycling and scrapping, affecting the main requirements of the Hong Kong Convention (HKC), and the European Community (EU SRR). Spanish Shipbuilding progress, characteristics of our shipyards, evolution of the order book and the need to innovate and offer projects with high added value to face Asian and European shipyards competition, were the axes of this introduction made by Alvaro Platero. New technologies are having a strong impact on the industry in general and on the shipbuilding industry. Jorge Dahl analysed in his introduction the role of Classification Societies in a shipbuilding industry strongly digitized and already immersed in the "4th industrial revolution". The introduction summarized how DNV GL is using this technology to develop services in an innovative way related to class and the path taken to offer fully digitized services.

In the “Digital Class” of DNV GL, concepts such as “Electronic Certification, Remote Survey, Operational Centre, Smart Survey Booking, etc.,” play a decisive role. Energy efficiency measures, changes in logistics, speed management and alternative routes, as well as new fuels would be the key drivers to decarbonize the maritime industry and meet IMO objectives by 2050. Per Marius Berrefjord I present the different options that the shipowner must achieve a triple objective: Reduce emissions, increase efficiency in your operations and optimize operating costs of your fleet. As part of this first session, President and Vice President were also elected, with Alvaro Platero, President of Pymar and GONDAN Shipyard being unanimously elected, and Elena Seco, Director for ANAVE. The secretary position falls, according to statutes, to Lucas Ribeiro DNV GL Area Manager for Iberia, Italy and Malta. Lucas Ribeiro concluded the Board by thanking the attendees for “the opportunity to know first-hand the concerns of the shipbuilding sector as well as the difficulties and challenges they face. This advice is a great opportunity to explore opportunities offered by new technologies when looking for innovative design and developed solutions allowing greater efficiency and sustainability in the shipbuilding and maritime transport sector. I feel a great satisfaction that DNVGL can actively participate in the development of the Shipbuilding Industry in Spain”.
