A Korean firm orders twenty merchant vessel at a stroke

They will be vessels with capacity for between 14.000 and 23.000 containers

The South Korean shipping line Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has signed a pre-contract with three Asian shipyards for the construction of twenty merchant vessels with capacity for between 14.000 and 23.000 containers and reduced emissions (eco-friendly, according to the company). The purchase amount of the order hasn’t been disclosed yet, as it is a “letter of intent” at the moment.

Seven of the vessels will be assigned to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), also South Korean. These will be high capacity merchant ships, for 23.000 containers, and will be delivered on the first semester of 2020. Other five, with the same capacity, will be built by Samsung Heavy Industries. The smaller capacity ones, for 14.000 containers, will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries. All the shipyards are from South Korea. Only Hyundai’s order is already valued, according to the local press, in 700 $ million.
