Renewable Spanish sector industries at the heart of the Baltic Sea

Iberdrola installs the first offshore wind farm in Germany with a 100% Spanish engineering team, counting with an investment of 1.400 million euros. This is the Winkinger offshore wind farm that will provide green energy to more than 350.000 German households.

There are 70 ultimate wind turbines pinned by Iberdrola in the waters of the Baltic Sea, located 75 kilometres offshore in the northeast of Rugen Island. It involves the construction of the first offshore wind farm of the Basque electric company in Germany, within a project that counted on the assistance of many Spanish companies and has employed around 2.000 people: GAMESA SIEMENS has built the turbines, NAVANTIA the foundations of the seafloor and Windar Renovables the nails.

The windmills are connected to Andalucía electrical substation, built by Navantia in the shipyards of Cadiz, in Puerto Real. A gigantic structure that had to be moved by super boats in two pieces and rises now above sea level. An engineering challenge, fighting against harsh weather conditions.

Iberdrola assures this farm will come into operation before the end of the year. The next milestones are in the United Kingdom with East Anglia One, and Saint-Brieuc’s project off the coast of Brittany.
