Green Light to the first Iberian marine wind farm in Portugal

Portugal has approved definitively the first marine wind farm of the Iberian Peninsula, the project Windfloat Atlantic will be in the Viana do Castelo coast.

The government and the renewable subsidiary of the Portuguese energy company EDP have reach an agreement to continue with the project, that have been refused by the ERSE because its fasten to the national electric net would mean an increase in the consumers’ rates.

The Project Windfloat begun in 2011 with the participation of companies as Repsol, Engie, Mitsubishi and Chiyoda in alliance with EDP Renováveis (EDPR). In the last years, the consortium has test an archetype of floating wind turbine of 3MW in front of the Póvoa de Varzim coast, resisting waves of 17 meters and winds higher than 60 knots, producing more than 17 GWh during its exploitation. Now the project begins a second level, the installation of 3 turbines of 9.3 MW each in a pre-commercial phase able to provide energy around 40.000 families.
