Freire established in the mega yacht segment by laying keel of another 105-metres
Spain’s shipyard plans to finish the hull of the vessel, commissioned by an American shipowner, in August 2023
Construcciones Navales Paulino Freire (Freire Shipyard) expands its portfolio specialized in mega yachts with the keel laying of a 105-meter expedition ship for an American shipowner. The milestone took place at the end of August, when a delegation close to the property went to the shipyard's facilities on Beiramar Avenue in Vigo to learn about the order progress.
“We are proud of the extremely efficient hull that went through an extensive tank design and testing program to make it one of the most stable and fuel-efficient designs,” explains the shipowner´s representative, according to the company from Vigo. It is a motor expedition yacht and technically designed to limit its impact on the marine environment.
The shipyard anticipates the hull will be ready in August 2023. The new construction contract came into force in 2021 and the cutting of the first steel plates began in May 2022. With this new milestone, Freire Shipyard expands its experience as a workshop for great shipbuilding whims, one of the most demanding disciplines in the sector, with industrialized systems and state-of-the-art technology. She is the second luxury ship of more than 100 m-length to be built at the Vigo´s shipyard. The first 111 m-yacht is located on its dockyard and is one of the largest yachts built in Spain up to now. The shipyard is setting it up to delivery by the end of this year.
Another of the best-known interventions of the shipyard from Vigo in the luxury sector took place last year, when Azzam, the Abu Dhabi’s king emeritus host mega yacht and the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, docked in Vigo. According to sources familiar with the operation, Freire installed a retractable system on the ship's turret, in addition to carrying out repairs, maintenance work and engine overhaul.
Those known as expedition or explorer yachts gain presence in this shipbuilding division as they allow their owners to sail to remote corners of the planet and explore the vast waterways of the world, far from crowded destinations.
