NAVALIA will host the official presentation of the European Fisheries Technology Platform
The firm tries to bring together the various links in the chain (extractive fishing, processing and commercialisation technologies for fishing products) to tackle RTDI areas in fishing. The EFTP has so far been made up of a preliminary Task Force consisting of firms from the sector. During the coming month of May, the city of Vigo will become the international centre for the naval industry. Over three days, Navalia will bring together the world's principal companies and the leading countries in the industry. It is an event that has not escaped the attention of the recently created European Fisheries Technology Platform (EFTP), which will be presented officially at Navalia 2010. This platform has been created to become a fundamental tool for promoting the transition of an obsolete and traditional sector into one that is competitive, sustainable and modern. The EFTP aims to bring together the various links in the chain (extractive fishing, processing and commercialisation technologies for fishing products) to tackle the RTDI areas in fishing that have so far not been taken up by other European Technological Platforms, and shall furthermore provide greater technological development in the European sector companies. The organisation has a preliminary working group or Task Force made up of bodies from the European fishing sector that has so far met three times (in Holland, Spain and Belgium).
The group works in 6 fundamental areas in the fishing industry: sustainability and management; energy efficiency; fishing vessel technology; fish and shellfish product technology; fishing gear technology; and logistics and marketing.
Looking to the future
The EFTP hopes to be a new European alliance, a challenge which needs close relationships and commitment from participating members and public institutions. Thus, the Platform aims to be capable of bringing together private and public players in order to create a durable basis on which to build initiatives that coordinate and combine efforts and create sustainable structures. In this way it will be possible to define and develop a European Agenda for Fisheries Research, a means that will ensure a sustainable and competitive future for the European fishing industry.
